Science and Innovation

Our red colorant is derived from Sorghum bicolor, a plant known for its nutritional and antioxidant properties. Through a proprietary process, we extract a rich concentration of 3-DXA, a potent polyphenol with natural coloring benefits.

3-Deoxyanthocyanidins (3-DXA) from Sorghum bicolor

Science: Validated, Stable, Functional

Unique Pigments: Sorghum leaf sheaths are rich in rare 3-DXA pigments (apigeninidin & luteolinidin) that lack a hydroxyl group at C-3, providing exceptional chemical and thermal stability compared to conventional anthocyanins.

Breakthrough Dimers: Newly discovered dimeric 3-DXAs resist color fading under neutral pH and in the presence of sulfites, giving Afri-Color™ its next-generation edge.

Heat Stability: 3-DXAs retain 79–89% of color after 2 hours at 95°C, and in some conditions, maintain or even increase intensity at 121°C—outperforming typical anthocyanins that degrade rapidly.

Additive & pH Resilience: Maintains brilliance in the presence of Vitamin C and across pH 1–7, making it suitable for beverages, dairy, bakery, confectionery, and nutraceutical applications.

High Natural Concentration: Sorghum leaf sheaths contain 30–45 mg/g apigeninidin and antioxidant levels up to 90× higher than many fruits and vegetables, ensuring potency and scalability.

Functional Health Benefits: Beyond color, 3-DXAs are antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, enabling “color-plus-health” applications in functional foods and wellness products.
